Gender: grammatical or semantic?

In my talk I will discuss the relation between grammatical and semantic gender, which seem to constitute two different but interacting dimensions. Taking Swedish as my point of departure, I will also discuss the relation between gender on nouns and gender on pronouns, and finally – since languages evidently can do very well without gender distinctions – the role of gender in human languages more generally.
