Discourse particles and the structure of Icelandic exclamatives
2012. október 16. 11:00
In this talk, I will discuss the status of various discourse particles in Icelandic exclamatives, expressing the speaker's attitude (sympathy, joy, surprise etc.) towards the descriptive content of the clause. These particles are phonologically integrated into the rest of the exclamative clause, thereby providing a window into the finer details of CP-structure in Icelandic. Among their most interesting properties is the fact that cannot be stacked (as only one particle per clause is allowed) and are restricted to wh-exclamatives although Icelandic has a rich array of non-wh-exclamatives (see Jónsson 2010).
