Aspects of Perceptual Prominence

Abstract:  

Perceptual prominence, defined as the perceived salience of a linguistic unit relative to its context, has proven to be a highly useful concept for both fundamental phonetic research and speech technology. In the talk, we will present some general background on perceptual prominence and discuss a recent example of its application, showing how the modeling of perceptual prominence provides a unified explanation for several empirically observed phenomena in a computational model of speech timing.
