Csilla Bartha is is senior research fellow and Head of the Research Centre for Mulitilingualism in the Research Institute for Linguistics of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and also Associate Professor at Eötvös Loránd University. Her primary interests lie in sociolinguistics; bi- and multilingualism, linguistics minorities, minority education, Deaf communities and Sign Languages, linguistic human rights,  (language maintenance, revitalization, minority education).

In the past ten years, she has directed a series of sociolinguistic surveys at national, regional and European levels. In the last decade she has been actively involved in different projects on the state of the Deaf community in Hungary as well as in work for the recognition of Hungarian Sign Language. Csilla Bartha conducted research on “The rhetoric of pathology, discriminatory practices and the strategy of multiculturalism: curriculum development of Deaf Studies”(2000-2001) as well as a public awareness campaign in 2001-2002 at the Open Society Institute entitled “Perceiving silence: Information accessibility, public awareness and integration of the Deaf in Hungary”. ). She has been involved in several EU funded projects as co-ordinator  or partner. For eg the project called Dimensions of Linguistics Otherness: Prospects of Maintenance of Minority Languages with the participation of eight ECE countries was one of the most successful ones.

She is author of several publications and of the first monograph on bilingualism in Hungarian language [A kétnyelvűség alapkérdései: Beszélők és közösségek, Budapest, 1999, 2005. ]. Her most recent edited book is on “Cigány nyelvek és közösségek a Kárpát-medencében” [Gypsy languages and their communities in the Carpathian Basin] (Budapest, 2007)
