The aim of the course / A kurzus célja
Linguists want to understand and model language, which means that a linguist needs to know what to expect in a given language. This course is a step toward building the knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of language, at least as far as syntax is concerned. By learning about phenomena that are often observed in language and across languages, you will broaden your understanding of what properties of natural language design we may observe, learn about basic ways of modeling such properties in syntactic theory, and uncover outstanding questions pertaining to the phenomena at hand.
A nyelvész feladata megérteni és modellezni a nyelvet. Ezt azt jelenti, hogy a nyelvészeknek tudniuk kell, mire számíthatnak egy adott nyelvben. Ez a kurzus az nyelvek anatómiájáról és fiziológiájáról szükséges tudás megszerzéséhez járul hozzá, a szintaxis területén. Olyan jelenségekről lesz szó, melyket gyakan megfigyelhetünk az emberi nyelvekben, és ezáltal a természetes nyelvek általános tulajdonságait is jobban megértjük. Szó lesz arrról, hogy a megfigyelt jelenségeket hogyan lehet modellezni egy szintaktikai elméletben, és olyan kérdésekről is beszélünk, amikre még nincs kielégítő magyarázat.

Assessment / Értékelés
One or two assignments/problem-sets (you are encouraged to work in groups but each person is responsible for their final write-up).
An analytical review of an article of your choice; it has to be a description+analysis of a phenomenon; you may choose one of the recommended (not required) articles or something completely different. The goal of this assignment is twofold: you will read something extra and you will start learning how to review manuscripts for journals or collections. I will give you some examples of reviews before we approach this assignment.
Egy vagy két otthon megoldandó feladat- vagy problémasor. A megoldásokat a diákok csoportosan megbeszélhetik, de a benyújtandó írott verziót egyedül kell elkészíteniük.
Egy szabadon választott cikk analitikus összefoglalása és bírálata, adtok leírásával és elemzésével. A cikket lehet, de nem kötelező az ajánlott olvasmányokból választani. A feladatnak két célja és haszna van. Egyrészt többletolvasmányt ad a kötelező olvasmányok mellé, másrészt gyakoroltatja a recenziók írását folyóiratokba. Minta recenziók a diákok rendelkezésére fognak állni.
